Monopoly
Rules of the game
The goal of monopoly is to completely ruin your opponents by buying land, building houses and hotels, and arranging for your competitors to spend nights in your properties and pay you rent.
In turn, each player rolls the dice, moves forward on the board the number of squares indicated, and eventually performs one or more actions, depending on the square they land on. For each completed turn on the board, each time they go back to the starting square, the bank pays money in the form of salary.
When you make a double, that is, when you get a pair of identical numbers on the dice, you can play again. If you make three consecutive doubles on the same turn, you are sent to jail, your turn is over and you must try to get out on the next turn.
When you have no more money, you are said to be bankrupt and are eliminated from the game. The bank will take back everything you had.
The different squares
According to the square where you land with a roll of the dice, you may have to perform one or more actions:
- If you land on the square go to jail, your turn stops even if you have made a double and you are immediately sent to jail.
- If you land on one of the tax squares, you must deposit the corresponding amount in the center of the board.
- If you land on a chance or community chest square, you must draw a card from the corresponding pile and follow the instructions on the card, before returning it to the back of the pile.
- If you land on the start square, the single visit jail square or the free parking square, nothing happens.
- If you land on a property, station or utility, then :
- If this property does not belong to anyone, you can buy it from the bank for the price shown on the square. If you buy it, you become the owner and can charge rent to any player who subsequently lands on it. If you don't buy it, nothing happens.
- If you own the property, nothing happens.
- If the property belongs to someone else, then the owner can claim rent. One is then obliged to pay the amount specified by the rules of the property card. If the owner forgets to claim their rent before the next player rolls the dice, too bad, it's too late then.
Jail
When a player is in jail, either because of making three doubles in a row, because of landing on the go to jail square, or because of drawing a card that sends them directly to jail, special rules must be applied in order to be able to get out and continue the normal route on the board.
- If you make a double, you get out of jail immediately and for free and advance the number of squares indicated by the dice
- If you don't make a double, you stay in jail and miss your turn.
- You can pay to get out of jail at any time. In this case, it doesn't matter if you make a double or not, you go back to your normal route.
- You can also get out of jail immediately and for free by using a get out of jail card, if you were lucky enough to draw or get one.
- You cannot stay in jail for more than three turns. If on the third roll you don't get a double, then you must pay and then resume your normal route.
Properties, houses and hotels
Houses and hotels allow you to claim a much higher rent when your competitors fall in your house. In order to build houses and hotels, however, you must first own all the properties in the color you wish to build on.
Until you own a complete color, you cannot build any houses or hotels on any property in that group.
If you own a complete group, then you can start building. You can do this at any time during your turn, you don't have to wait until you land on the property you want to build on before you can do so.
Building houses must be done one at a time, in a uniform manner. That is, you are not allowed to build a second house until there is at least one house on every property in the group. Similarly, to build the third house, you must first have at least two houses everywhere.
One hotel is equivalent to five houses.
To build a house, all you have to do is pay the bank the price of a house as indicated on the property sheet.
Mortgages
If you are on the verge of bankruptcy, or you are running low on cash, you can mortgage your properties. By mortgaging a property, the bank gives you back half of the purchase price.
However, you cannot claim rent on a mortgaged property.
Before you can mortgage a property that is part of a group that you own as a whole, you must first sell all the houses in the group.
When you strike it rich, you can lift a mortgage, which allows you to claim rent again as before. To do this, you must pay the bank the price of the mortgage, i.e. half the original purchase price, plus 10% interest.
Variants
This electronic version of monopoly offers you some Variants from the basic game.
- Auction: if this option is activated, when a player cannot or do not buy a property, it will be Put up for auction
- Automatic payment of rents: if this option is activated, the rents are automatically paid to the owner of the land on which you fall. If this option is deactivated, the owner of a land must manually claim his rent by pressing his "buzzer", the space key.
- Free Parking Jackpot: a commonly accepted variant that proposes that you win all the tax money deposited in the center of the board when you land on the free park square.
- Double pay on start: another commonly accepted variant that proposes to receive a double pay when you land on the start square, as opposed to the single pay that you earn when you pass through the start square without stopping.
- No buying on the first turn of the board: an optional third rule that is also often applied, especially when playing with 4 or more players, as it is felt that the players who play last are at a disadvantage without this rule.
- Extra set of chance cards and community chest: to make the games a little more lively.
